A local Sandiacre landmark is Springfield Mill. This iconic grade II listed building built in 1888 for Terah Hooley by local Long Eaton Architect, John Sheldon as a lace mill. Following the lace industry decline the building laid empty until it was sympathetically restored in 2006 into 104 luxury apartments. There was a major fire at Springfield Mill in April 2020, during the first Covid-19 Lockdown. A number of residents had to be evacuated, thank fully on one was hurt and while significantly damaged the building has been repaired. Springfield Mill lies on the bank of the Erewash Canal, a 12 mile strip of working canal with 14 locks which links Langley Mill with Trent Lock. This route also forms part of the Nutbrook trail, a cycle and tow path passing through Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
